Your privacy

The short version
- We keep what we need to run Castmanor and to remember you: your chats, what characters remember, and a few settings.
- We do not sell your data and we do not share it for advertising.
- You can edit what a character remembers, export your chats and memories, and delete your account yourself.
- Scenes and stories are shared only when you choose to, and anyone with the link can see them until you stop sharing.
- We use replies from your chats, with your name and contact details taken out, and signals such as regenerate, continue and edit, to improve our own characters. Settings has a switch: in the EU, the UK and Brazil it is off until you turn it on; everywhere else it is on until you turn it off.
Who we are
Castmanor is operated by Qualiaverse LLC, 30 N Gould St Ste R, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA. It is an independent service where adults talk with AI characters. Everyone you meet here is an AI character.
For anything about your data, write to us at hello@castmanor.com.
What we collect
Here is what we collect:
- Your account
- On the web, a random anonymous id, created when you pass the age check. No name, password or phone number.
- Your age check
- Your month and year of birth, which you tell us once so we can check that you are old enough: 18 or older, or 19 or older in South Korea. If the date you enter makes you too young, we do not create an account or save the date. If you then change the date, we keep a note of that on the account you create.
- Your phone's age range
- In our mobile apps, where the law has the app store share it: whether your device says you are an adult, under 18 or unknown, how it knows (for example, you declared it or an ID was checked) and an age band such as 16 to 17. We never receive your date of birth from the store.
- Your settings
- Your language, your time zone, a guess at your country (so we can show the right crisis line and set the starting point of the learning switch; it also goes into our usage totals), what you want to be called (you can set it in Settings or tell a character in a chat), your pronouns and any nicknames you add, and your quiet hours.
- How you found us
- The page you arrived on, any link or campaign tag it carried, and which version of a screen you were shown (we test wording).
- Your chats
- The messages you and the characters exchange, and the audio of any voice notes a character sends you.
- What characters remember
- Notes built from your chats: facts about you, moments you shared and a running summary of your story together, plus a simple level for how close you and each character have become. Because they come from what you say, they can include sensitive things you tell a character, such as your health, sexuality, religion or politics. You can see, edit or delete the notes on the Memory page.
- Characters you bring or make
- The characters themselves, and what you give us to build them: pasted chat text, screenshots, character cards, exports and your answers to our questions.
- Voice calls
- Your voice is streamed to Google's AI model while you talk, so the character can answer. We do not save the audio. We save a text transcript of the call as messages in your chat, plus the length of the call and simple counts of your voice use.
- Series you watch
- For each series: the episode you are on, how far into it you got, which episodes you finished and how many times you chose to talk to a character after an episode. It is saved with your account and never includes anything you type.
- Time in the app
- Simple timing signals: when you are actively using the app, which part you are in (such as chat, browsing or watching an episode) and which character you are with. They never include what you type. We add them up into daily totals and a rough picture of the hours you are usually here.
- Your first minutes
- In your first session: which first screen you saw, which mood or quick reply you tapped, which character was opened for you, and how long each step took. It is saved with your account and never includes anything you type.
- Notifications
- If you turn them on: your device's notification address and whether you said yes. The start of each notification message travels through the push service of your browser or phone, which is Google's or Apple's, to your device.
- Your email
- Only if you save your account. We use it to send you a sign-in link or code and to let you back into your account. If you switch it on in Settings, characters can also write to you there, at most once a day.
- Telegram and Discord
- If you talk to Castmanor in Telegram or Discord, or connect Telegram to your account: your Telegram or Discord id, the chat id and the language their app gives us, the country you tell us there (in Telegram also your local time), and the messages you send and get. Telegram and Discord carry those messages under their own privacy policies. In both, your account id comes from your Telegram or Discord id, so it is not anonymous. Use /settings in Telegram or Discord to export or delete your account, and in Telegram to disconnect it from a web account.
- Request log
- A log of requests the app makes for you, such as a sign-in code, an export, a voice call or turning on notifications. It can include the email address you typed, your device's notification address, the description of a character you make, the links to your exports and voice notes, and the keys that start a voice call. It stays until you delete your account.
- Safety notes
- Notes our checks keep so we can look after you: when we last saw signs of a crisis (which turns on gentle mode for a while), signs that someone may be cut off from other people, leaning on AI too much, losing touch with reality, struggling with eating or stopping medication, a note if you say or strongly hint that you are under 18, whether we closed your account for that reason, and safety labels attached to single messages and calls. Imported chats and call transcripts are checked the same way.
- Reports and hidden characters
- If you report a message or a character, we keep the reason you picked, your note and a copy of the reported text so our team can review it. The characters you hide are saved with your account, and hiding only changes what you see.
- Scenes and links you share
- A record of each share: which character, which messages you picked and whether you included your own lines. For a scene, the page we publish with the lines you picked, with personal details we find replaced. Your links carry a personal invite code, which we use to count the people who arrive through them.
- Creator claims
- If you bring characters you made as their creator: the creator name, links and short bio you give, your three confirmations, and the code we ask you to post on a page you link. We visit that page to check the code.
- Stories you make
- If you use Make our story: the story, its cover and its audiobook, when they were made and, if you share it, its link. They are kept for 30 days, or until you delete them.
- Copies to improve our characters
- While the switch in Settings is on for you: a copy of the replies characters wrote to you, your messages that they answer and what you did next, with your name and contact details taken out and your account id swapped for a scrambled code. See Improving our characters.
- Creators form and e-mail list
- What you type into the creators form or the optional e-mail list on castmanor.com: your handle, your e-mail address and your message. It is kept in a separate database. See How long we keep it.
- Technical logs
- Like any website, our hosting may keep basic request logs, such as your IP address and browser type, for security and reliability. Our servers also log what runs for you (your anonymous id, the character, timings and, on voice calls, technical details of the connection). Server logs are kept for about 30 days.
Why we use it
- To run the service: to deliver your chats and calls and keep your account working.
- To remember you, so characters can pick up where you left off.
- To keep you safe: to spot a crisis, keep Castmanor adults only and enforce our rules.
- To message you if you ask us to: if you say yes to notifications or emails, characters may write first, around the hours you are usually here and never in your quiet hours.
- To understand what is useful: counts and timing signals show us which features people use. We may also show different people different versions of a feature to see what works better.
- To improve our own characters, using replies and a few signals from chats, as set out in Improving our characters below.
Who handles your data
Google Cloud hosts our servers and stores your account, chats, memories, files and voice notes.
To write replies, memory notes, voices, stories and pictures, what you write and say is sent to Google Cloud AI services: your messages, your voice and the text of your calls, the text of the voice notes that characters send you, the lines you pick when you share a scene, the descriptions you write to make a character, and the chats and files you bring or turn into a story. These services do not use any of it to train Google's models. Google may keep limited logs to watch for abuse.
We do not sell your data and we do not share it for advertising. We share it only with services that help us run Castmanor, such as one that delivers sign-in emails, or when the law requires it. We do not give your chats to anyone else to train their models.
Other people who use Castmanor cannot read your chats or your memory notes, except for what you choose to share (see Scenes and links you share, below). Our team may look at a specific conversation to fix a problem, look into a report of abuse or follow the law.
Cloudflare runs our link service at k.castmanor.com, which opens shared links and shows their previews. It reads only what a shared link publishes, not your private chats.
If you use Castmanor in Telegram or Discord, they deliver those messages and are not part of our servers.
Scenes and links you share
A shared scene publishes the lines you picked, and your own lines too if you choose to include them, on a page that anyone with the link can read. Before it goes out, an automatic check hides names, numbers and addresses it finds and stops scenes it cannot share. The check is not perfect, so only pick lines you are happy for others to read.
The link's preview, in chat apps and on social sites, shows the character's name and picture and the opening lines of the scene, yours too if you shared them. The picture you can save with a scene is made on your device. People who open a scene can continue it with the character in their own chat, and what they continue stays theirs if you stop sharing.
A link to a character shares no chat. It opens that character's page. Every link you share carries your personal invite code, which we use to count the people who arrive through your links. The code is not your name or your email.
You can stop sharing a scene at any time. In Settings, under Shared scenes, choose Stop sharing. The link then shows that the scene is no longer shared, and we remove its lines from our database at once. Like all deleted data, they can stay in recovery copies for up to 7 days (see How long we keep it). The link's preview can keep showing the opening lines for up to 5 minutes, and a preview that another app already saved may stay until that app refreshes it.
Characters you share as their creator
If you bring characters you made, you choose for each one who can find it: everyone in Discover, only people with its link, or only you. A character you list, or share by its link, shows your creator name as its credit.
Once we have checked that you made them, your creator page shows your creator name, your short bio, the links you gave and the characters you listed, and anyone can open it. You can unlist or delete a character at any time in the app. Deleting your account removes your creator page and your characters. To take your creator page down without deleting your account, or to take down the pages about your creator name on castmanor.com, write to hello@castmanor.com.
Stories from your chats
Make our story is an option on a chat. We read the chat you pick once, and the notes the character keeps about you where there are any, to write a short story told by the character, a cover picture and an audiobook. All three are made by AI, and the story pages say so.
A story is private to you until you choose to share it. If you share it, anyone with the link can read and listen until you stop sharing. Stopping removes the shared page and its copies of the cover and the audio.
We keep a story for 30 days after it was made and then delete it, with its cover, its audio and any shared page. You can delete it sooner on its page. Deleting removes its files and its shared page; like all deleted data, it can stay in recovery copies for up to 7 days (see How long we keep it).
The text of the chat is sent to Google Cloud AI services to write the story, the cover and the audio, as it is for replies. Once the story is written, an automatic check takes out other people's names, emails, phone numbers, addresses and links before you see it. The check is not perfect, so look through a story before you share it. The story service does not use your chat or your story to train anything.
Improving our characters
We use replies from your chats, with your name and contact details taken out, and your regenerate, continue and edit signals, to improve our own characters. Once a day we copy part of what happened in your chats to a private store: the replies characters wrote to you and the other versions you swiped between, your message that each reply answers and up to six messages before it, and what you did next, such as asking for another version, continuing, editing or rewinding a reply, how soon you wrote back, and which character, language and AI model were involved.
Before anything is copied, your account id is swapped for a scrambled code, and your name, email addresses, phone numbers, links and @handles are taken out of the text. This is automatic and not perfect. We do not copy memory notes or stories, and we do not copy replies from voice calls or imported chats. We leave out the conversations of any account that has a safety note.
Settings has a switch for this. In the EU, the UK and Brazil it is off until you turn it on. Everywhere else it is on until you turn it off. If we do not know your country, it starts off. We go by the country on your account: we guess it from your device, and you can change it in Settings.
If you switch it off, we stop copying and delete what we already hold from you within a few days. If you delete your account, we delete it within 2 days. Deleted copies can stay in recovery copies for up to 7 days (see How long we keep it). Until you do one of these, we keep it with no end date, in a private store in our own Google Cloud project that only our team can open.
We use it only to improve our own characters. We do not sell it, and we do not give your chats to anyone else to train their models.
How long we keep it
Your chats, memories, characters, files and what you watched stay until you delete your account, or until the end of the 30 days after we close an account for being under 18 (see Under 18s). You can edit or delete what a character remembers at any time on the Memory page. Stories you make are kept for 30 days (see Stories from your chats). When you delete your account, we delete your chats, memories, characters, files, shared scenes, stories, what you watched, settings, saved email and sign-in.
A few things outlast that for a short time or no longer point to you. If you reported something, our team keeps a copy of the reported text, with the message you reported, and the reason, without your account or your note. Server logs stay for up to 30 days, and Google's audit logs of administrative actions on our systems for 400 days; they hold no chat content. Deleted data can stay in our database's recovery copies for up to 7 days, after which we can no longer recover it. Deleted files can still be recovered by us from storage for up to 7 days. Google Cloud may also keep backup copies of deleted data for a limited time under its own policies.
Links to your exports and voice notes work for anyone who holds the link, and they do not expire until the file is deleted. Keep them private. A link to a scene you share works until you stop sharing it. A link to a story works until you stop sharing it, you delete the story or its 30 days end.
The creators form and the optional e-mail list keep what you type (handle, e-mail address, message) in a separate database, only to answer you or to e-mail you about new features. A closed creators request is deleted 90 days later, one that was never closed after 180 days, and an e-mail-list entry after 365 days, or sooner if you write to support@castmanor.com. Deleting your Castmanor account does not remove these; write to us and we delete them within 30 days.
Delete your account and data
Castmanor, operated by Qualiaverse LLC, lets you delete everything you have here yourself, or ask us to.
- In the app: open Settings, choose Delete my account and type DELETE to confirm. It takes a few seconds and cannot be undone. The same page lets you export your data first.
- By email: write to hello@castmanor.com, from the address you saved if you saved one, and we will act within 30 days.
- What is deleted: your account and sign-in, your chats and messages, what characters remember, the characters you made with their pictures, your creator page, the scenes you shared and your share records, your stories with their covers, audio and shared pages, the copies we made to improve our characters, your voice notes, exports and other files, your notification addresses, your settings, what you watched, your saved email and your usage totals.
- What stays: a copy of anything you reported, including the reported message text, kept without your account or note; server logs for up to 30 days; Google's audit logs of administrative actions on our systems for 400 days, with no chat content; deleted data in our database's recovery copies for up to 7 days; deleted files, which we can still recover from storage for up to 7 days; Google Cloud's own backup copies for a limited time; the email service's own record of emails it already sent for us; and what you typed into the creators form or the e-mail list on castmanor.com (see How long we keep it). If we closed your account for being under 18, a small record stays (see Under 18s). What other people copied from a scene you shared is theirs.
Your controls
- Memory page: see, edit or delete what a character remembers about you.
- Settings: export your chats, memories, characters and account details as a download.
- Settings: delete your account, with your chats, memories and characters. This cannot be undone.
- Settings: turn push notifications and character emails off, or change your quiet hours.
- To stop a character from writing first, switch it off in that chat's menu, or use the stop-all button in Settings.
- Settings, Shared scenes: stop sharing a scene.
- A story's page: share it, stop sharing it or delete it.
- Settings, Improving our characters: switch it on or off.
On your device
Castmanor keeps a few small things in your browser: your sign-in, your language and a few choices, so the app works and remembers you between visits. It also keeps a copy of anything not yet saved to your account, such as an unsent message or a call transcript, so nothing is lost if the page closes. If the age check says you are under 18, your browser also keeps a note of that for a day.
If you arrive through a Castmanor link, our link service (k.castmanor.com, run on Cloudflare) can set a cookie named cmk. It does this only for Apple's browser engine (Safari, and every browser on an iPhone or iPad), and not in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland. The cookie holds a random key that lets you reconnect to your account if the browser clears Castmanor's storage, which Safari can do after a week without a visit. It lasts up to 400 days, and we use it for nothing else. We keep a one-way scramble of the key next to your account id, so we can find your account again. A second cookie, cmf, lasts 2 minutes and tells the app that the key is brand new. Signing out or deleting your account removes the link between the key and your account, except for an account we closed for being under 18.
Our pages can count visits with a message that carries no cookie and no identifier. Such a count says only which step happened, such as seeing a page, tapping a button or passing the age check, your page language, the campaign tags on the link and the kind of device (iOS, Android, computer or other). We do not store your IP address or browser details with it, and counts are kept for about 3 months.
We do not use advertising cookies or ad trackers.
Under 18s
Castmanor is for adults only. You must be 18 or older (19 in South Korea), and we ask for your month and year of birth at the door.
If you clearly say you are under 18 to a character or on a call, we close your account and delete its chats after 30 days, or within about an hour if you say you are under 13. We also close an account if the birth month and year you give us when we ask again make you under 18, or if your phone's age setting says you are under 18. Like all deleted data, these chats can stay in recovery copies for up to 7 days (see How long we keep it).
If a message only hints that you may be under 18, characters keep things platonic and do not write first, and we ask you once to give your birth month and year again. If you answer as an adult, this ends at once. If you do not, it ends after 14 days.
Our systems make these decisions automatically. If you think we got it wrong, write to us at support@castmanor.com and a person will look at your account.
A small record stays after a closed account's chats are erased: when the account was made, why and when it was closed, and your country and language. It holds no chats and no name. Delete my data now, on the closed screen, removes it. If you delete a closed account yourself, we also keep a note that links your browser's restore key to the closure until the 30 days are over.
Where your data goes
Your data may be stored and processed in the United States and in other countries where Google and our other service providers run their services. Those countries may have different data protection rules than yours.
Changes to this page
If we change this page, we will update the date at the top.
